GeoQuestion 8/4/2012

GeoQuestion: (From National Geographic) The world's largest Dairy export company has its headquarters in which Island country south of Fiji?

Answer to last question: A: Ireland. The Scoti came from Ireland and invaded by ships to the Britannic tribes. The raiders eventually settled down and formed their own tribe in modern day Scotland. The tribe was called Dal Riata. Their inhabiting of present-day Scotland is most-likely how it acquired its name.

Post-Roman Britannia

In honour of the Olympic Games in London

The modern day British Isles are often seen as a very well-to-do region with booming infrastructures and successful economies. However well over a thousand years ago, soon after the Romans left the barbaric isles, the land fell into a war-torn frontier --  a clashing grounds for ethnicities and religions.

There were three main sections of the Isles at that time. Hibernia (Ireland) Caledonia (Scotland) and Britannia (Wales, England). Hadrian's Wall, or what remained of it, separated The northern Picts from the southern tribes. The tribes warred against each other, and against the invaders from the north, and the Scoti from Ireland. The tribes were almost always in a brutal struggle to survive. Then the final straw landed: The Anglo-Saxons. The Anglo-Saxons were frontiersmen of a sort, and many came as a means to spread the Gospel of Christianity to the barbaric tribes of Britannia. They also came as hired blades. The Tribes of Britannia, invited and even paid the Anglo-Saxons to fight the Picts and Scoti.  The Angles and the Saxons (from the modern-day regions of Angeln and Lower Saxony in Germany), as well as the Jutes (probably from Jutland in modern day Denmark), all came to inhabit the land for their own reasons. However, the Anglo-Saxons found themselves ill-content with what was given to them by the Britannic Tribes.  Eventually their power far surpassed the quablling tribes and the Britannic peoples were now fighting against the Picts from the north, the Scoti from the west, the Anglo-Saxons from the south and east, and they also fought against each other. It was times like these where great unifiers (Like King Arthur) were born and fought against the invaders. The Anglo-Saxons brought Christianity that mixed with the religions of the natives known only as "pagan."

Best Map I could find for Britannia in the year 500A.D. The Angles (purple) , Saxons (grey), and Jutes(white) are already consuming half of Britannia.

The Anglos and Saxons ruled Britannia until the mid 11th century when The Norman Invasions took place and William the Conqueror took Britain for himself and defeated Harold Godwinson, last Anglo-Saxon King and Harold Hardrada, the Norwegian Viking King.

Since that time The Isles have never been completely unified, and Britain the larger Island was unified under the United Kingdom in 1707. Well actually back then it was referred to as the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Hope you like this British History, Enjoy the games!

Aurora, Colorado

In a city 3,000,000 strong in the Denver metro area there was a national tragedy last midnight. 71 theater-goers, watching the Dark Knight Rises, were shot 12 of them were killed. These stats make the Aurora Massacre the largest mass-shooting in the USA. Columbine had 36 victims. Virginia Tech had 56. 2011 Tuscon had 20. Its sad to see people do this.

Keep the families in your thoughts and prayers. Go see the Dark Knight Rises, despite a shooting in Aurora, Colorado, the movie is safe to watch and it doesn't need less people seeing it because of one demented sociopath.

I saw this on another blog. I think we have seen this 'look' before.

Geography Awareness

Everyday...well, frankly, it hasn't quite been everyday. ALMOST everyday I have posted a "GeoQuestion" on Facebook. A couple I use from National Geographic, a couple are from my books, but most of them are wrought and brought from my butt. I enjoy asking people tricky, or challenging questions. Frequently people confess that they Googled the answer or something similar, and other times they don't confess but it is obvious to me anyways. I urge people to Google the answers if they do not know the answer, because the time put into typing "Micronesian countries" and reading enough to find the answer is time put towards Geography awareness, which is what this blog and my questions are all about.

We in the United States, and honestly others as well, severely lack geographical knowledge. Where is the logic of preparing children for twelve years to go out into the big world without teaching them what the big world even is. Where is the logic in people trying to find themselves if they don't even know where they are. Where is the logic behind forcing kids to recite the fifty states of America if two kids in every high school class cannot even find the USA on a world map (approx 1 in 20 cannot) or if one third of those children cannot find a given state such as Louisiana on a US map? Why do we learn the "whats" if we do not understand where those "whats" are? "Fewer than 50 percent of those polled in the survey could identify the U.S. states of New York or Ohio on a map."

Where is one of the most important pillars of understanding along with Why, How, What, When.

Except Geography is a little more important than simply supporting the "Where" pillar. I could connect every (or almost every) school subject to Geography quickly and easily. I will in a later post. A good understanding in geography helps development in nearly all other subjects, and especially in skills involving spatial thinking and connectivity.

My journey begins to spread the word of Geography. Test yourself on this: Geography Zone Challenge You may very well score low this first time, but after a while try again, and soon you can breeze through the whole thing.
